Pet loss quotes: 50 short lines for a dog or cat who died
The best pet loss quotes are short and specific: one line that names the pet and something they did. For a dog: "You were the first one to the door, every single time." For a cat: "The sunny spot is still yours." For a friend: "Thinking of you and Max today." Below are 50 original lines, free to use.

Key takeaways
- A short line that names the pet and one real habit of theirs means more than a long, general quote.
- Every numbered line on this page was written by PetVids and is free to use in a card, caption, stone or video.
- For a sympathy note, use the pet's name and skip advice. "Thinking of you and Max" is enough.
- Only two classic lines appear here, both public domain and checked: Lord Byron's 1808 epitaph for his dog and Rudyard Kipling's "The Power of the Dog."
How to choose the right line
A quote after a pet dies is doing one of two jobs: saying something to your pet, or saying something to someone who is grieving. Either way, the lines that land are short, plain and specific. Swap in your pet's name wherever you can. A name turns a nice sentence into their sentence.
| Where it's going | Good length | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| A post announcing the loss | 1 to 2 lines | Lead with their name and one thing they loved |
| A sympathy card to a friend | 1 to 3 lines | Name their pet, offer love, ask for nothing back |
| A garden stone or urn engraving | 3 to 8 words | Read it aloud. If it's hard to say, it's too long |
| A memorial video's last frame | Name, dates and 1 short line | Pick a line that sounds like you talking to them |
| A letter to your pet | As long as you need | Start with "Thank you for" and keep going |
Everything numbered below was written by our team. You're free to use any of it, change it, and leave our name off. If the loss is very fresh and words feel impossible, our guide to coping with pet loss may help more than any quote.

Would a gentle film of them help?

When a friend's pet dies, the kindest message is short and uses the pet's name. Avoid advice, silver linings and "at least." Replace [Name] with their pet's name.
- I'm so sorry about [Name]. They were lucky to have you.
- Thinking of you and [Name] today.
- [Name] had the best life with you.
- I'll never forget how [Name] greeted me at the door.
- There's no wrong way to miss them. I'm here.
- Sending love. Grief this big comes from love this big.
- [Name] was family. I'm so sorry.
- You gave [Name] a wonderful life, right to the end.
- No need to reply. I just wanted you to know I'm thinking of you.
- I'm sorry your best friend is gone.
- I loved [Name] too, and I'll miss them.
- Holding you close today, and remembering [Name] with you.

Short lines for a stone, an urn or a video
Engraving and end cards need the shortest lines of all. Each of these fits on a garden stone or under a name and dates.
- Forever my good boy. (Or: forever my good girl.)
- Loved every day.
- Home is wherever you were.
- Gone ahead. Never far.
- Our hearts, on four legs.
- Always at my feet. Always in my heart.
Write your own in two minutes
The lines people keep coming back to are usually their own. Try this:
- Write their name.
- Add one habit only you would know: where they slept, how they greeted you, the sound they made at dinner.
- Finish with what you'd say to them now: thank you, sleep well, wait for me.
"Biscuit, who sighed every time I sat down. Thank you for every evening." That's a memorial line no one else could have written.
If you'd like to see your line on screen, our Running Free memorial video ends on a card with your pet's name, their dates and a short line you choose. It's $89, made from 5 to 10 photos you already have, and it comes with a keepsake poster still.
Two classic lines, and where they come from
Many quotes passed around after a pet dies have no clear source. We've kept this list to two that are well documented and in the public domain.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Lord Byron, "Epitaph to a Dog" (1808). Byron wrote it for his Newfoundland, Boatswain, who died of rabies in November 1808. It is carved on the dog's monument at Newstead Abbey, Byron's estate. The prose tribute above the poem on that monument, which praises Boatswain's "Beauty without Vanity," is often credited to Byron, but it was written by his friend John Hobhouse.
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Rudyard Kipling, "The Power of the Dog." Each verse ends on a version of that refrain. Read to the end and the warning turns into the point: we give our hearts anyway.
Lines we left out
You'll often see "If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went" credited to Will Rogers. We couldn't find a reliable source showing he said it, so it isn't on our list. And the famous Rainbow Bridge poem has a real author, Edna Clyne-Rekhy. If you share it, credit her. Our guide to the Rainbow Bridge poem tells the story and includes a short original poem you can use freely.
Questions
What is a good short quote for a dog who passed away?
Pick a line that names your dog and one habit of theirs. Simple options: "You were the first one to the door, every single time," "Sleep well, my friend. I'll take it from here," or "Forever my good boy."
What do you write when someone's cat dies?
Keep it short and use the cat's name: "I'm so sorry about Luna. She was lucky to have you." Skip advice and silver linings. Offering a specific memory of the cat, if you have one, means a lot.
Can I use these pet loss quotes on a headstone or in a video?
Yes. Every numbered line on this page was written by PetVids, and you're free to use, change or engrave it without credit. The two classic lines by Byron and Kipling are in the public domain.
Did Will Rogers say "If there are no dogs in Heaven"?
It is widely credited to him, but we could not find a reliable source showing he said or wrote it, so we don't attribute it. If you use it, "often attributed to Will Rogers" is the honest way to put it.
Who wrote "in life the firmest friend"?
Lord Byron, in his 1808 poem "Epitaph to a Dog," written for his Newfoundland, Boatswain. It is carved on Boatswain's monument at Newstead Abbey. The poem is in the public domain.
